(42,661 posts)Housing for the poor is a serious issue--even here in liberal Seattle, we have hundreds of tents under freeways, bridges, roadsides, the infamous "jungle". The areas are almost all garbage strewn and they have been several fires, as well as crimes including murder, because while tents keep the rain out, they don't provide indoor plumbing, sanitation or safety checks.
I used to live in the WW2 workers-housing here that ultimately became housing projects here. (The story of how they were built is full of irony and in many cases racism) My husband was raised in one called "High Point". While not East-coast rough, they were rough enough. What the King county did, was tear down the substandard roach-invested projects, and built a series of variable-worth 'townhouses' and small communities that could be subsidized as section 8 housing or financed to buy. We also have Habitat for Humanity housing. It's still not nearly enough. But it was a start, and with our homeless crises here, I hope to see more action.
I'm proud of her for her focus on sub-standard housing, very glad she went there.
