(1,632 posts)and accused Sanders of showing "monumental discourtesy" by lobbying for an invitation to a church sponsored conference on economic and environmental issues for political gain.
What lies at the heart of the controversy is not the parsing of the words "invitation and "meeting" but the maneuvers Sanders is employing on the eve of the primary in NY. Appearing on national television and stating he has been invited to meet with the Pope is seen by many as campaign tactic to help turn the enormous Catholic vote in NY in his favor. There is a reason candidates seek endorsements and having even the remotest semblance of one is better than nothing, especially when you are double digits behind and desperately need a way to convince people you are still viable.
Sanders spent hundreds of thousands of dollars in campaign funds to travel for a ten minute speaking slot. He then waited in the lobby for the opportunity to press flesh while the Pope was on his way out to meet a flight. The cries of foul are challenging the pretense of the collegiality, common goals and planned meeting between Sanders and the Pope. Neither the vatican nor the Pope are willing to cooperate with that narrative and to that end, the Pope went on record to say in no way should their courtesy when crossing paths be construed as anything political. In terms of getting out the vote, the results on Tuesday will show whether it was money well spent.
