(5,636 posts)Bernie is a gay rights fraud. He never risked political capital on gay rights. He voted against DOMA, but said nothing about it. He supported gay marriage before Hillary, but not until the Vermont legislature legalized it. Not only that, he was from a really liberal state where he could have been much bolder. Bernie is not and has never been part of the gay rights struggle, other than a liberal from a liberal state where he could vote the right way.
Meanwhile, the Clintons faced down the religious and far right, and barred discrimination against people with AIDS or who were gay by federal contractors, granted persecuted gays asylum, fought to prevent Congress from outlawing gay adoption, appointed scores of gays to government positions, Bill talked about gay rights in a State of the Union address, Hillary was the first First Lady to go on a gay pride parade. They got into a lot of trouble, and Bill's efforts to allow gays in the military met a huge backlash that forced him to accept DADT. DOMA, meanwhile, was voted on 6 weeks before the national elections, so the only people who voted against it were liberals from safe districts, like Bernie.
Bernie is all about economic justice. There's a reason that leading organizations and individuals active in gay rights, women's rights, and civil rights have not endorsed him. He's NEVER risked political capital to fight for gay, womens, or civil rights. Given the state he was from, he should have been on the leading edge, but he was not.
