...cruel folks.
He was a rather tragic figure (almost heroic, in the most sympathetic view), although, he seemed to redeem himself as he progressed with his displays of valiance which seemed to strengthen him; albeit in vain. (I'm remembering this, so I'm not positive I'm relating it accurately.)
All 'tilting at windmills' really represents in the context I used it is attacking imaginary enemies.
