Sanders can beat Trump with Independent support, but since indies can't vote in closed primaries, he can't beat Clinton. On the other hand, Clinton can win those closed primaries, but has no Independent appeal, and so polls worse against Trump.

Turns out, you can't expect your GE voters to win a primary for you... but you also can't expect your primary voters to win the GE for you
