(5,648 posts)The Democrats we need to worry about are those like the ones in Kentucky that are concerned about coal jobs. They all along were planning to vote for Trump in the GE, but voted for Sanders in the Kentucky primary to try to keep Hillary from winning. Of course they failed to consider that Sanders would be at least as driven to get quit using coal as Hillary is. Of course Kentucky is going to go Republican in the GE anyway.
On the other there will be Republicans and right leaning independents who will ether not vote or will vote for Hillary because they cannot see Trump as President.
There will be blue collar Democrats concerned about loss of jobs due to outsourcing. They may well be an area of concern that needs to be addressed. Despite the Sanders and Trump rhetoric, globalization is a reality and economist will tell you that on the whole it will benefit our economy. However, there is no denying that it will cause real pain in specific industries and therefore in specific geographical area. Those jobs are going away no matter what we do. Specific government programs are absolutely needed to cushion the blows. On the other hand consumers will not go back to paying higher prices to prevent globalization. The US with government helping to lead the way, we must position ourselves a a country to be in a position to be leaders in business areas which will produce the high paying jobs of the future. That also means we have to set job training programs to make sure we have the people to fill those jobs.
The most pressing need is to get the Sanders supporters on board behind the nominee.
Bottom line: If Democrats keep the Obama coalition together (blacks, Hispanics single women, and young people - all of whom seem to be on board) the Democratic nominee will win and Trump will lose.
