He was cannon fodder. If he won great, but they will not lose the war to get him elected. They are playing a long game here and his loss is just one hiccup in the road. Plus it was Mitt's turn, now they don't have to run a 1% cultist in the next election cycle. It's like an NFL tanking the last 6 games in a season to get a better draft pick next year.
