different definitions of progressive however.

Traditionally, progressive means using the power of institutions and government to advance society. (A local church can be progressive.)

Although many moderate conservatives used to be at least partly progressive, for the past four decades conservatives have become increasingly anti-government to the point that most had become implacably opposed to progressive programs. Lumping Kaine with them would not be...appropriate.

In any case, this definition recognizes the success made possible by bringing together all who want to use government to solve problems too large to take on otherwise. FDR was progressive by this definition, even if he was so determined to protect the establishment and privileged elites like him that many on the far left of his day came to hate him and see him as a major enemy of their brand of progressivism. Which, by their definition, he was.
