ON EDIT: This makes me wonder how they ever thought this would not be noticed and fiercely criticized. Maybe they are so tightly wrapped up in their bubble that they cannot imagine anyone knowing anything but what they say to them.

This also suggests that Donald really isn't letting anyone even vaguely competent guide him in any way. It seems to me that he would have to have been the one in charge of helping Melania with her speech, because surely his kids would have known that the straight up plagiarism would get called out loudly and repeatedly.
