The new Republican Party has been taken over by Teabaggers and now the Alt-White fascists. It's both becoming more extreme - and because of that - smaller. I suspect the more moderate republicans will slide into the "independent" category rather than embracing the policies of the much more progressive Democratic Party.

I think becoming a Democrat is just a bridge too far for most rank and file republicans.
