(15,463 posts)First, they could not even let the Bush tax cuts EXPIRE.
The supreme court strikes down the mandate, and the Rs and the media will completely destroy President Obama.
He will have absolutely NO political capital under any circumstance, much less going into his reelection, to try to play some kind of power play like this.
He WILL be framed as a WEAK president, and Ds in the house and senate who are facing reelection will NOT back this, because they know they will get beat up for "BACKING THE PRESIDENTS UNCONSTITUTIONAL POWER GRAB!"
Public will back TAX HIKES? Are we talking about the United States of America?
The Rs, and the media WILL drive the debate as HCR FAILED, and in these tough economic times we should just go back to what we have now, which is working just fine.
Second - We can work all we want for a progressive majority in the house and senate. It is not happening. Not in our lifetime. Again, we have seen the high tide for democrats in the house/senate for some time. We simply are not going to see that number. And, whatever our thoughts are, there are always going to be "blue dogs" in the mix. There simply are too many 50/50 rural seats that can be won by a tempered democrat that just can not be won by a "progressive."
Look - while WE know single payer is the common sense answer, we face an electorate that is VERY subject to being misled, and an opposition that is VERY eager to mislead.
We just barely got HCR done, by one post dated reconciliation vote in the senate, it is a hair away from being unraveled - and it is the REPUBLICAN plan from the battle on this 14 years ago.
