He knew what they were trying to get out of him, and he refused to give it to them. He was bruised and battered and kept on the defensive, but there was no way around that--he wasn't there to shine (he'd already answered 112 pages of DoD-related questions from the panel), just had to get through it with no big mistakes and no loss of composure or flashes of temper.
