They follow what they are told to do, be it the preacher or the politician. That simplistic "faith" without analysis is what churches depend on and there are a frightening number of people who don't have the slightest idea what "allegory" means or bother to try interpreting the text for themselves.

I think in most cases it is innocent, but there are a lot who are willfully ignorant. The ones who use these people to their advantage are the true offenders.
