You're probably thinking of Elena Kagan who was never a judge but had served as the Dean of Harvard Law and was a highly-respected legal theorist, a senior legal adviser to the Office of the President under the Clinton administration, twice nominated to the same DC-circuit seat on the federal bench (both times Judiciary Cmte. Chair Orrin Hatch refused to schedule hearings effectively killing her nomination), Solicitor General for the Obama Administration and had been Thurgood Marshall's law clerk in 1988 and previously clerked for Judge Abner J. Mikva of the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia.
