Wealth isn't necessarily obtained by crooked means. Bill Cosby is entertaining, People pay to see him. People pay to read/see Rowling's stories.

Wealth is also relative. My sister and her husband live a very modest life. I'm probably worth ten times what they are, not that that is saying much. My best friend is worth ten times what I'm worth. But we're all paupers compared Romney. Romney is a pauper (we think--maybe no longer) compared to Bill Richardson. Bill Richardson is a pauper compared to Sheldon Adelson, the Kochs or Warren Buffett.

It all depends on what you do with the resources at your command. Sheldon Adelson and the Kochs give hundreds of millions to right wing causes in the hope of buying politicians who will do their bidding, especially on loose tax laws and loose environmental laws. Warren Buffet has pledged most of his billions to charity.
