I think it's made-up media bullshit.

However, I'm trying to get you to use better arguments in advancement of that fact - "but everyone does it!" makes it look like you think there's something to be "guilty" of, and that "everyone does it" ought to get the person you favor off the hook. Instead you ought to be making the point that there is no guilt in the first place.
