2. I think the teabagger wing of the GOP forced Ryan on Mittens.

They may be hoping he'd be to Romney what Cheney was to Bush - the puppetmaster. But the teabaggers are such extreme ideologues that they don't let reality interfere with what they think ought to happen. And Ryan himself is an ideologue who hasn't worked outside D.C. in some 20 years. Romney, I think, is a cynical opportunist who is now a captive of the true believers, whose support he needs. Unfortunately (or fortunately, for us), his and Ryan's lack of contact with reality is going to bite them in the butt.
