I'm sure you're not really this obtuse to not understand that our two party system has had a stranglehold on US politics.
It's really difficult to come up in one of the parties and be willing and able to challenge the status quo.
That is why Bernie's lifelong status as someone outside the parties gives him legitimacy to challenge. But his life long caucusing makes him a viable Democratic nominee.
