(814 posts)I respectfully disagree. Obama did NOT push it through, he hemmed and hawed and tried to avoid getting it passed in any timely manner. The person who SHOULD be credited with getting it pushed through is Nancy Pelosi and I'm not a fan of her in the least. That being said, I will give credit where credit is due and it belongs on her shoulders and the pressure she brought to bear.
I especially single this out because I remember when his campaign was asked about repealing "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" and one of his campaign people said "So and so, our campaign usually doesn't give a one word answer but when it comes to "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" the answer is yes". I'm paraphrasing as I don't remember it exactly but tried to come close because that aide or whatever said yes, committed to it, didn't make excuses which is why I'm being so critical of your giving him credit for something he doesn't deserve and tried to avoid.
I think the single biggest things he will be remembered for is opening up Cuba, which is huge and about time, as well as Obamacare, despite the fact the latter is a bailout package to insurance companies. I have no problem with Single Payer but I resent the idea that for the fact I breathe I'm expected to pay money to for-profit insurance. Anyway, I commend him in opening up Cuba as he could've just as soon let it be. The embargo's continuation for as long as it has been I have to think is a running joke to most people. One or two years after the USSR broke up that should've ended, plain and simple.
