"I ask them to imagine this: what if a guy agrees to pay a prostitute for sex, they go to a hotel, and then he changes his mind, meaning there's no sex and no pay. Would she be relieved? Would she thank him for not "using" her? "

i think that is the wrong question. instead. if he said, here is the money, no sex necessary, would she be relieved?
