K & R stands for kick and recommendation. You are kicking a thread by replying and you are also giving it a vote for recommended reading. (By clicking on the box that says "Du Rec"
"nt" stands for not having any further text, or "no text". It saves people from opening up your reply only to see nothing further there.
For example, I'll use your question.
6. Could someone tell me what k & r, nt stand for? nt
(without your smiley face in the text box, the white area) It would let everyone know that you had nothing further to add but what you asked in the title of your response. (gray box)
