2. Quite a few people seem to be having issues with avatar uploading.

I don't know if there's a solution - most of them seemed to get it to work after trying it numerous times.

Perhaps you could try a different browser - I'm not sure that will make any difference but at least it could help determine if it's a browser issue. Also either try doing a page refresh bypassing the cache (usually ctrl+F5 for most browsers on Windows) or even clearing your browser's cache entirely to make sure you're actually getting the (hopefully new) avatar image off the network.
