Vanderbilt women's basketball upsets LSU as Mikayla Blakes scores 32 [View all]
Vanderbilt women's basketball got its first top-10 win of the Shea Ralph era, taking down No. 5 LSU, 65-61, at Memorial Gymnasium on Jan. 4
The 11th-ranked Commodores (15-0, 2-0 SEC) got off to a strong start in the first quarter but fell behind in the second amid offensive struggles. A strong finish to the third quarter got Vanderbilt back in the game and an 8-0 run midway through the fourth quarter to take its first lead of the second half.
The two teams traded scores back and forth for most of the fourth quarter. Mikayla Blakes made two big plays with a driving layup off a turnover and then, after she missed the ensuing and-one and Vanderbilt got an offensive rebound, another layup to put the Commodores up six.
With nine seconds to go, Blakes, who finished with 32 points, hit a free throw to give the Commodores a four-point lead and LSU (14-2, 0-2) failed to score on its final possession.
