I once saw a guest on a daytime TV show who did one of those things for a living. He showed video of Bill Clinton on the campaign trail in 1992 or 1996. His voice was running on fumes as well. The professional explained what Bill had done wrong to damage his voice, but I don't remember the details.

A PBS program about Pete Seeger revealed, through his brother, that a voice professional of some kind had told Seeger that sticking his head up when he sang was going to damage his voice, but Seeger never changed that.

In any case, I'm sure speaking to massive crowds again and again is damaging in itself, but Sanders could probably benefit from consulting a voice coach and/or speech therapist for prevention techniques.
