How can the fact that he, an incumbent, won in a landslide, tell against him in any way?

Just askin.

People do say that he can't win, you know.
For example, they criticize his hair-do.
They say that his hair-do isn't electable. I say that's ridiculous -- proven wrong from the facts. In this case the facts tell for him, not against him.
Likewise facts regarding his electability in general seem to tell for him, not against him.
