Debbie Wasserman Schultz heads up the DNC and it is she (and whomever she works with) who have set the calendar for the Democratic debates. What they have in mind is their concept of "the good of the party." If the Dems lose the GE, it will not be good for them. They see Bernie as an outsider who doesn't have the money and connections -- and "presidential bearing" -- to win the GE. There may be some other factors at work as well.

They seem to have missed the significance of Bernie's surging popularity, and they doubt its staying power when the lowest of the low, Republicans, start their attacks on him.
