7. My father and brother both served in wartime

And both had/have significant scars.

For a time, I was living next door to this obnoxious right-winger who was all bluster about the superiority of the US military, but of course had never served a day in his life. No surprise, he had a giant yellow ribbon magnet on his Hummer. (Yeah, a Hummer in Silicon Valley.) So one night I snuck over and Gorilla-glued it on. A week or so later, when he tried to take it off to wash his vehicle, he was absolutely furious. I asked him what the fuss was, and he said some *#@&! had obviously glued it there. I innocently said, "I thought they were permanent. I mean, to show your ongoing support. Whyever would you want to remove it?" He just stammered, "Well, uh, yeah but...."
