Reagan did it in 76 during the convention before the nomination and many considered it to be a political stunt when he named Senator Richard Schweiker who was a moderate.

Ford narrowly won the nomination but lost the election to Carter.

BTW: Ford named Bob Dole as his running mate in '76.

I believe that's why they ran him against Clinton 20 years later.

It was "his turn".
