(67,782 posts)....and only twice got more than 200,000 votes. Remember, he runs for office in Vermont with a total population of 625,000, 95% of which are white.
On the other hand, Kamala Harris got 7,500,000 votes when elected Senator in 2016, Kirsten Gillibrand got 4,000,000 and 4,800,000 votes in her two Senate runs. California and New York are among the most diverse states in the country. Based on this, I'd venture to guess that both Kamala Harris and Kirsten Gillibrand have a lot more "political skills".
Finally, Senators do not have access to "lots of money making opportunities LEGALLY", their outside income is extremely limited. They can earn only 15% of their salary. They can earn money on investments and can (this is important) receive royalties on books. They can NOT accept honoraria, or speaking fees, other than $2000, which has to be donated to a charitable organization.
