If a republican had talked about the bipartisan glory days of bipartisanship when they could find common ground with George Wallace or Strom Thurmond when they were Democrats, outrage among 2019 Democrats would have been the predictable and legitimate response.

The defensiveness is an astonishing display of white fragility.
