(13,390 posts)Is that the Civil Rights Act has not lived up to it's promise. People of color whose peers were brutalized during protests are still burying young people killed by police.
Among the 140 million people who are living in poverty, non white people are over represented. Families which were supposed to have been able to move into better circumstances were damaged when people were prosecuted more harshly than ever for minor drug offenses. After income providers were removed from families, those who were left struggled with the bureaucracy of social services until that rug was pulled out from under them.
The civil rights act may prevent businesses from explicitly discriminating but that does not stop store owners and their employees from imposing a voyeuristic security presense based on an assumption that people of color are likely to steal.
Black people have less familial wealth, worse health outcomes, and black women die giving birth more frequently in a country that has an unusually high maternal birth rate.
Like most Black men, TaNeshie Coates lives in fear of police. He has watched lives of people he cares about be damaged or destroyed. And his interactions with stores, realtors, and many, if not most, white people.
Civil Rights Act US has not delivered on its promises. The voting rights act was trashed.
I started kindergarten in 1975. There was a neighborhood that white people called n- town. The people of color who I grew up with experienced the school and town very differently from me.
To dismiss Coates' experiences with racism is to deny the reality of racism and attempt to erase millions of people from US life.
primary today, I would vote for: Undecided
