American history has been designed to acknowledge that slaver happened, but never to deal with it in any meaningful way nor to understand that problems that resulted long after the practice was banned. We say that the Civil War was fought to "end slavery". It was and it wasn't. There were people who certainly saw the moral evil that it was, but a big thrust for the war on the Union side was to preserve the Union and punish secessionists. The South certainly fought to preserve slavery as an economic and social good. People think that the South was evil and the North was good, but there was a TON of racism in the North too.

Race and the treatment of Black people is something that many Americans just want to move past rather than deal with the problems that still exist to this very day.
