(33,643 posts)"I didn't ask for your vote" (apparently not what was said, ergo, not even sure why we're discussing it, but since that's what the OP says) comes off as smarmy and disrespectful.
If you're just reading the words, you can imagine a reader putting the emphasis on different words in their head ... "I DIDN'T ASK for your vote". Sounds bad. "I didn't ask for YOUR vote" sounds even worse.
"I'm not asking for your vote" sounds (and reads) as something said in a much more respectful tone. People understand 'asking for your vote' in the present tense as having a specific 'meaning'. When used in the past tense, that meaning is lost.
I understand the OP is reporting what was heard from a commentator, but maybe one should go to the source before trusting a commentator. Just sayin' ... made the same mistake myself many times ...
primary today, I would vote for: Joe Biden
