93. No reason to apologize to Hill. He voted against Thomas. She wanted the hearing. Republicans did

not want her to have one at all. Joe Biden had to get that hearing and to do so he had to
agree that Republicans could question her credibility, of course, and to a timeline.

So the questioned—Grassley, Specter, Heflin, Simpson. Yes, they were challenging her. And Thomas, Very emotional, claimed the hearing was a high tech lynching. The Dem side were cowed.
He would go on to be only the second black person in history to be on the Supreme Court. The
Republicans knew they put Dems in a political bind in nominating him, an arch conservative, for Thurgood Marshall’s seat, a civil rights legend.

Ted Kennedy was on the Dem side and very passive, detached. Of them all, Biden tried to
really test Thomas. But he was not Hill’s defense lawyer, in the end, he voted against Thomas. This, at the time, was not a Biden vs. Hill hearing.
