he didn't even get his BA from Howard University (not saying that as a putdown, he's written about that)
An "academic" implies that he has a BA, MA, and probably a PhD...he is a scholar, yes.
He's most often compared to James Baldwin (who did not have academic credentials...when Baldwin began to teach, it was very late in his writing career long after he was famous)...I disagree with that comparison as well (for complicated reasons) but Baldwin's and Coates' careers do share some similarities in trajectory.
