1988: Jackson at minimum
1992: Jerry Brown and arguably Paul Tsongas and Paul Simon over Clinton
1996 and 2000: no real challenger
2004: Kucinich and probably Dean over Kerry
2008: Obama arguably more liberal than Clinton by a nose, mostly because of how he was perceived culturally
2012: no challenger
2016: Sanders
Liberals have generally not won the nomination, but they invariably face an uphill battle against a perception of being unelectible. But when moderates lose, nothing is rethought about this assumption.
So, as a liberal, I can count on the candidates with the boldest and most specific policies not to get the nomination, including Inslee. Ex-vice presidents seem to be popular among Democrats, although the last one to win was LBJ.
