In reply to the discussion: Kamala Harris considered "Most Strong" among Dem contenders in new CBSNews Battleground Tracker Poll [View all]bigtree
(94,217 posts)28. what is electability?
...it's a combination of factors for voters.
That's not 'twisting' it's a fact. At this early point in the election campaign, 'electability is mostly a result of polling, elevating a candidate, like Joe Biden in what pollsters call a feedback loop.
Alex Seitz-Wald writes about this:
...many argue that perceptions of electability are driven largely by national media coverage, creating what analyst Nate Silver called a "feedback loop" and Washington Post media critic Margaret Sullivan dubbed a "self-perpetuating effect."
Some pundits and voters say one candidate former Vice President Joe Biden is the most electable, so they tell pollsters they want Biden, which produces media coverage that reinforces the idea that Biden is most electable, which then filters back down to voters concerned about "electability."
"In the old days, it wouldn't matter, but now the national narrative is seeping into voters' conscious in a way it hasn't before," Murray said. "So their answers when pollsters call is based on the national narrative, which then feeds back into the national narrative."
What we actually need to know before determining if a candidate is the best one to face off against Trump is how durable the factors are behind that 'electability' measure, which is, I'm sorry, a general term with myriad factors behind it.
How did Biden end up behind on being 'strong' when he's leading in that overall question of electability? That's what I'd be concerned about.
primary today, I would vote for: Joe Biden

OP
She's one of my top two candidates- it's the vague phrasing of the poll that annoys me

Bigtree, the Battleground poll ASKED an electability question, and Biden was way ahead

I'm not suggesting the electability numbers can't change. I'm just pointing out that the question

So not strong in voters support, but strong in aggressively fighting Trump and for Americans?

that is the way I took it and it is exactly why I am leaning strongly toward her.

No, it doesn't. The poll asked specifically what voters thought of individual candidates' chances

I agree with Harris topping the list but I think Buttigieg couild end up being seen as #2 on

This apparently refers to toughness as an image, and it's an image Harris cultivates. It does NOT

Biden is less forceful towards women than he is towards men - something that should be admired.

No, electability is the more specific question. You can see just from the replies to your OP that

I think perceived strength against Trump is more a sustainable, productive attribute

The question was NOT "perceived strength against Trump." Why are you twisting

Opinion pure and simple when you look at the numbers of who is more electable ....who can win

Demsrule86 didn't say that Biden was the "only one who can win." You misread.

I don't think I've ever said that Biden's the only one who can win. I've pointed out the polls

It is not the numbers of Democrats polled...it is those votes we need in WI, MI and PA...

Btw, that 32% number saying she's "strong" is mostly from California, which had that at 39%

Harris scored the lowest of all 5 candidates when asked whether a candidate was authentic.

Again, I think the poll's question about who can beat Trump already answered that question, and

Again, the poll question you keep going back to did NOT say "forceful against Trump" or

No, it isn't that. The poll had a question about how likely candidates are to beat Trump, and Biden

Honestly, I'm guessing most people responding to that part of the poll weren't sure what they were
