(408 posts)I think we'll win. I am very fortunate to have a very strong support network. I will always have a can do attitude. I'm 52, I've also realized since I was 20 that there are limits to what I want. I've always enjoyed thinking about what those limits are. There are people who are happy, fully-functioning, worthwhile quadriplegics. I don't think that's for me. Of course, if it were to happen I'd give it a shot, but I'd feel no obligation to continue. My husband lost three of his limbs to an allergic reaction. He went into the hospital able-bodied and came out with one hand. The other hand and feet----chop, chop. 1 to 3 % of people given heparin will have this reaction, but the doctors don't have to inform you when they use it. It's considered a "professional consideration".
My husband wanted to live. He WANTED to give it a shot. He was told he'd walk with prostheses. He died anyway. I'm not asking for sympathy. There are lots of people who have had worse happen to them. I KNOW if what happened to my spouse of 22 years happened to me, I'd want to check out. But he wanted to live and I wanted that for him. When we were lying down I told him, "I believe the doctors when they say you will walk again, but if this were it, if the rest of my life was caring for you, I'd be happy just to have your company." I enjoyed him.
There are so many, even those who talk a lot, who live an unexamined life. Socrates said, "The unexamined life is not worth living." Evolution cares only if you pass your genes.
primary today, I would vote for: Undecided
