Muskie probably would have made it closer than McGovern, who ran one of the worst presidential campaigns in modern American history, but he would have struggled to beat Nixon, whose popularity was trending upward throughout most '72.

The better question is if Watergate still happens with Muskie as the nominee.

If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for: Joe Biden
