Have you ever listened to him discuss the difference between the classical definition of "socialist government" and being a socialist or, as he has clarified his political leanings many times since this ancient video, a "democratic socialist?" Basically he says, if you support and believe in public schools, you are a socialist; if you believe the government should build and maintain roads and transportation infrastructure, you are a socialist; if you think fire and police departments should be publicly funded, you are a socialist; ... and the list goes on and on.
It strikes me that Bernie detractors prefer to focus on divisive labels rather than the admit any merit to his thinking. That's a shame. It holds us all back in my opinion, us being middle and working class Americans and those who value and respect them and their right to a fair deal.
