to being a fetish. It is not by accident as I said above something has changed and it
is important to understand how these people became, not by accident, gun cultists.
As a child in the fifties, I lived in a remote rural area. My father owned a gun; my uncle
owned a gun; every family we knew owned a gun. It was no big deal. Hunting was normative
and protection might be needed from wild life. When we moved to the city, my dad left his
gun behind. It did not serve us in the city.
Now guns are a statement of personal power. The bigger the gun the more power is attributed
to the owner; the more guns that are owned, the more power is attributed to the owner.
Gun ownership has become not an accidental cult, but an intentional one. It is important
to understand this shifting dynamic if we want to unravel this crisis.
