63. A ban and a voluntary buyback would start a natural process for eliminating them.

The ban would make these types of guns unprofitable for the gun industry. That, in turn, would take away the incentive for the gun industry and its lobbying wing, the NRA, to mess with people's heads. Without those commercial interests driving the assault weapon paranoid fad, the assault weapons would start to be seen by their owners as unnecessary, boring, and problematic possessions.

The input flow to the AR-15/AK-47 pool would dry up. The voluntary buybacks would be there to absorb and destroy the remaining guns as they shake loose, either because their owners tire of them, age out of using them, or die and leave them to kids who don't want them.

You couldn't get these guns easily anymore, and that should impact the rampages.
