In fact, Scientific American reported on research that showed a dominating characteristic of populist movements is antagonism.
I think a lot of people see these behaviors and assume they're fringe when in fact they're manifestations of populism's dominating features. How many people know populist movements in democracies by their very nature exist to overcome majority rule? Their leaders typically pose as reformers and never say that, of course, until or if they give a huge clue by trying to subvert elections.
Happily, our LW populist movement failed last time and is doing significantly worse this time as well. Lost a lot of those who don't need antagonism topped up to candidates who don't sell it.
