I have lived for years in one of the reddest states. Working class people there were dead set against Hillary Clinton but found Bernie Sanders to be an interesting candidate they could support. These folks should be blue all along, but something happened to really sour them toward establishment or centrist Dems. Moving to center is not a guaranteed way to get the most votes. I could organize for any "insurgent" Dem like Sanders, Yang, Tulsi but it was the worst kind of uphill battle organizing for centrist dems.

Just my oft repeated experience there
