(58,785 posts)How can anyone possibly believe that? But I believe Sanders does and speaks the truth as he sees it.
I suspect, though, that his enmity to the ACA arises predominantly from the fact that it is a Democratic Party achievement. That belief is strongly reinforced by his own proposal, which is also based on capitalist, for-profit medicine, and is very similar to the ACA. But requires destroying the ACA to implement.
After all, he's spent his life insisting that the liberal Democratic Party is really no different from the Republican, that only socialists would create a national healthcare system for the people. And Obamacare is a complete refutation of that delusion. Notably, he's self-sidelined himself in the center of power for going on 30 years, and it's not his achievement. The Democrats did it.
Not insignificantly, his socially conservative populist followers, the ones who voted for Trump in the GE, don't like "Obamacare" for much the same reasons as the typical Republican. They want national healthcare for themselves, all right, just not the one with Obama's name on it.
Btw, he's spent his life dreaming of socialist revolution, for goodness sake. How could he really believe in his own program that is based on capitalists profiting from illness, inevitably just as much of a "cruel, dysfunctional health care system" as Obamacare?
'I am Not Now, Nor Have I Ever Been, a Liberal Democrat' ~ Senator Sanders
I believe you, Senator Sanders. I am a liberal Democrat, and I'm more than a little tired of being badmouthed by you for it.
primary today, I would vote for: Joe Biden
