(2,227 posts)The whole issue at the American/Mexican border is all about immigration. And I will be the first to insist that, at least for the foreseeable future, we should NOT be a country with open borders.
This is not some far-flung country half way around the planet, or some country we can see far in the distance, from our front porch, this is right next door, in spitting distance. We will address it, one way or another. Voluntarily would be the best option.
Why are all those people fleeing their own countries? Economics, and corruption/violence, especially drug cartels.
We can sit back and let corporations handle it. That has worked SOOOO well so far, so why give it up?
There aren't that many American jobs left that they can export.
The only other influence that can be leveraged is governmental/military. If troops are sent to support the Mexican people in an effective, well thought out plan (yes, I know that "effective", "well thought out" and "military" are oxymoronic - a word a just made up), the Mexican people would be our friends and supporters, forever. It would help us, and help them.
Although it flies against many of our worst assumptions, based on misuse by authoritarians, dictators, and our OWN military mistakes, "military" doesn't have to be nothing more than a necessary evil.
Again, isolation is NOT the answer. We can either talk the talk, followed up by walking the walk, or we can admit that we are NOTHING BUT talk, and suffer the consequences.
Mayor Pete is willing to, at least, bring up the issue so it can be addressed. I have no problem with that.
primary today, I would vote for: Joe Biden
