In reply to the discussion: Electoral College Map...we need a centrist candidate to win the rustbelt to stop Trump. [View all]dawg day
(7,947 posts)And he was elected mayor of the prototypically rust-belt city of South Bend, IN.
People who voted for Trump in 2016 in Michigan and so on and might vote for him again are UNREACHABLE. It's far more important to attract new and younger voters and stop wasting time trying to attract people who think Trump might deserve another term. They aren't going to vote for a centrist either.
and I am a Rustbelt centrist. Clinton was a centrist, I note, and she lost those states. Sure, sexism played a huge role, as did Russian cheating. But her being a centrist didn't counteract those, did it?
No one is going to vote for or against Trump because of policy considerations. If you vote for Trump, you're doing it because either you're a Republican who always votes Republican (unreachable by any Dem), or voting for him specifically because of some (cough) personal reason, like you like the way he hates the same people you hate. Unreachable.
We should support the Democrat who reflects our own values. One of these acceptable candidates will win the nomination. Centrism shouldn't be the most important consideration. Whoever gets new voters in-- that's important. And that might be someone who focuses on what's good for people, which might be a form of progressivism.
But the ones who would vote for Trump again? Forget them. They aren't going to be brought back into the land of the sane.
primary today, I would vote for: Joe Biden
