(10,909 posts)I do not think it is a perfect system.
But is is a system that allowed a black man to become President for 8 years and a woman to lead the party in 2016. So there may be some misogyny, some discrimination and some bias against gays among the voters and maybe the media but the system has allowed good candidates to prevail through those disadvantages far more in the Democratic party than the GOP or as Independents. That discrimination is not the fault of the Democratic party - it is a fault within the country at large. But the Democratic party had enough equality so that many women, blacks, an Asian and a Latino felt they had some sort of shot to give it a go. And most got some respectable results. They were not jokes. Kamala Harris was a very serious contender until she stepped into trouble with her own actions.
Kamala Harris', Cory Booker's and Julián Castro's, for example, have suffered far more because of their campaign and candidacy. That has much more to do with why they're not on the stage in December than anything else. Hillary Clinton's efforts in 2008 and 2016 suffered from misogyny but that was not restricted within the Democratic party. It was less so in the Democratic party than the country at large. Barack Obama's efforts suffered from discrimination. He has to be that much better to overcome it. But again, that was not the fault of the Democratic party.
Women, LGBTs, non Whites and non Christians have some sort of discrimination disadvantage. But I will not pin that on the Democratic party. I don't buy that for a second. It is a national discrimination issue.
primary today, I would vote for: Joe Biden
