Congratulations to our presumptive Democratic nominee, Joe Biden!
Democratic Primaries
In reply to the discussion: Poll: GOP voters drawn to Biden more than other 2020 Democrats [View all]caraher
(6,278 posts)40. It is a grave error to think this translates into votes
Nothing in this poll suggests Biden is uniquely positioned to flip votes to D from R. The poll question is this (asked for each leading candidate separately):
... how closely do they align with your personal political views?
Choices are very closely, somewhat closely, not very closely or not closely at all. The 33% figure for Biden is the combination of the first two categories among self-identified Republicans. The lowest any Democrat listed got was Warren and Buttigieg's 26%, which isn't all that much lower (Sanders was 28%, Bloomberg 30%) in a poll listing a 3.1% margin of error.
Bear in mind that the poll offers respondents three options for party affiliation - R, D and Independent. What this result says is this: among the group most likely to vote for Trump, slightly more claim their views align with Biden than with other candidates. Reality check: those people are voting for Trump in 2020, period. The poll did not ask whether they'd consider voting for a Democrat, and in a world where Trump's approval rating is still north of 40%, these are the people who simply will not vote for us.
Turn out the Democrats and the sane independents. We win by bringing record numbers of voters to the polls, not by "persuading" people who still imagine Trump is a fit president. Those people are beyond persuasion.
If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for: Joe Biden
primary today, I would vote for: Joe Biden

I hear you... see what I said above about the negative effect it could have on the party's base.

Wins in open primaries may well have been nothing more than sabotage votes by republicans

Any candidate to the left of center on the Democratic Party spectrum, as opposed to to the left

I did not bracket them together as being all alike in the degree to which they are left leaning,
