(58,785 posts)Good character and trustworthiness are critical and indispensable. Haven't the Republicans taught us that?
When a candidate lies repeatedly and significantly in campaigns, that's a really bad sign. The Republicans are now totally corrupt, yes, and they lie all the time to deceive their voters. But not Democrats, especially the high-level Democrats the Republicans fear.
When a candidate demonstrates bad character and untrustworthiness in other ways, that's also a really bad sign. If he'll use ruthlessly dishonorable means to get power, what would he do while using it and manipulating to keep it? And no, "everyone" doesn't do it. Republicans do, a couple of our dozens of candidates do, but our admirable Democrats don't.
But to issues, go ahead and pick one important to you: If it's liberal and progressive, it's in the Democratic Party platform and also on the agenda of Democratic candidates of good character. Many have the character and competence to come through.
Btw, Congress, the legislative branch who battled for two years to create the ACA, some of whom put their careers on the line for it, would of course not trash it and start over. There are many important reasons why they wouldn't, but one existential one is the danger that the Republicans would use this legislative fumble (that'd have to take place over at least 7 years!), to destroy both. A Democratic congress would instead, while they had the power, serve the people's wishes by adding the public option and other improvements already waiting to the ACA. That's good news. The Republicans and others have not been able to destroy it, and barring destruction by a corrupt, politicized SCOTUS, we will have it.
primary today, I would vote for: Joe Biden
